Income Tax & TDS Filing
Most filing problems are not arithmetic. They are the wrong form, a mismatch against the Annual Information Statement, or a deadline missed by a week. All three are avoidable, and all three are expensive to fix after the fact.
Getting the return right the first time
A return that is filed but defective is worse than one filed late, because the clock keeps running while you fix it.
- Pick the form from your income mix, not from last year. Adding capital gains or a second house property moves you off ITR-1, and filing ITR-1 anyway gets the return marked defective.
- Reconcile against the AIS and Form 26AS before filing. The department already has that data, and a mismatch is the most common reason a query lands.
- Compute both regimes. The new regime is the default, which is not the same as it being the cheaper one for you.
- Report losses even when there is no tax to pay. Reporting them is what lets you carry them forward against future gains.

Frequently Asked Questions
Salary with one house property up to ₹50 lakh is ITR-1. Capital gains, more than one property, or foreign assets move you to ITR-2. Business or professional income is ITR-3, or ITR-4 under presumptive taxation. Trusts and NGOs file ITR-7. We pick it from your actual income rather than assuming.
A belated return can still be filed, with a fee under Section 234F and interest on unpaid tax. What you lose is the ability to carry forward most losses. Filing late is always better than not filing, and the sooner the smaller the interest.
Most notices are routine. A 143(1) intimation is usually an arithmetic or TDS mismatch and is resolved by responding on the portal. Send it to us and we will tell you what it actually is before you worry about it.
